Conference “Rule of Law in Light of Progress Report 2015” Held at UBT

Organized by the UBT and the Austrian-Kosovo Society, a conference, “The Rule of Law in the Light of the 2015 Progress Report,” was held at the UBT campus, which brought together a considerable number of participants from the fields of judiciary, politics, and the civil society.

 

Opening the conference, Law Faculty Dean Dr. Ardian Emini thanked participants for the cooperation with the UBT and assured them of the UBT staff would make best efforts to produce high quality students in the field of law so that they could serve in different areas of justice.


Enver Peci, president of the Judicial Council of the Republic of Kosovo, spoke about a number of challenges that judiciary in our country is facing, noting that one of the most evident challenges was the small number of judges in the regular courts.  He also spoke about the commitment of the Kosovo Judicial Council to improve the image of judiciary in the Republic of Kosovo.


Kosovo Ombudsperson Hilmi Jashari, presented a number of aspects of the work of the institution he leads, and which to a great extend are linked to justice.  Mr. Jashari noted that the students should gain adequate academic education in order to help improving the legal environment in Kosovo and protection of the human rights. 


Ilir Deda, a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo, encouraged the students to involve in political and social activism in order to create and environment the offers equal opportunities to all. 


Vjosa Osmani, another member of the Republic of Kosovo Parliament, spoke about the importance of the rule of law in general as well as the procedural aspects of the parliament’s bodies in charge of oversight of the government and judiciary. 


Dafina Bucaj, a senior advisor to Justice Minister Hajredin Kuci, spoke about the work of the Justice Ministry in terms of organization of the prosecution and judicial system as well as the active role that the ministry was playing in improving the existing legislation and sponsoring new laws in meeting the European standards. 

 

Lawyer Taulant Hodaj presented to the audience examples from the practice of judiciary and noted the importance of improving the judicial procedures in the field of human rights protection.
