Curriculum Structure

INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The program lasts for two years. In order to successfully finish the course, 120 credit points have to be collected. Credit points are a quantitative measure for the overall work load of a student. They include the actual lectures as well as the time spent preparing and evaluating lectures (attending events vs. private study), taking exams, preparing for exams, thesis and seminar work and, as the case may be, work placements. An effort of 30 hours is taken as a basis to earn one credit point. One study year’s effort amounts to 1500 hours of work. Consequently, the whole course corresponds to 3000 hours of work. One credit point is equivalent to an ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit point.

The program content follows the structure and perquisites suggested in the Association of Information Systems (AIS) guidelines for Graduate Programs in Information Systems.  The curriculum content is comprised of five essential components of information systems programs (a) Information Systems prerequisites, (b) Business prerequisites, (c) Information Systems Technology, (d) Information Systems Management, (e) Concentration tracks and Master Thesis.

The first year of study of the program introduces students to general courses in information systems and environment where they operate. The second year of study is sub-divided into concentrations (majors) in: Business Information Systems, Management of Information Systems, Electronic Commerce, Information Systems Security and Geo-information Systems.  The student would have to pick one of the concentration areas which constitute three core modules equivalent with 18 ECTS.  In addition, students will have to pick two minors – one from Elective Group A – competencies (6 ECTS) and one from Elective Group B – sectors (6 ECTS). The second semester includes a course in Research Methods and Writing in Information Systems (5 ECTS), and internship (5 ECTS) and a master thesis (20 ECTS).  More information about the master thesis follows after the education plan presented below.
